Dark Passion Play

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Finally the new Nightwish album “Dark Passion Play” is out featuring Tarja’s replacement.

Dark Passion Play

One of the drawing aspects of Nightwish before this album was perhaps Tarja’s soprano voice giving depth and power to the metal music that the band played. The new singer Anette though hotter than Tarja no doubt ( :b ) , has a more melodic pop-ish voice. I’m not sure who’s the better singer, but I would say that Anette’s singing is enjoyable and compliments the music well enough. It doesnt stand out as much as Tarja’s voice does.

Nightwish - Amaranth

Also singing on this album is the band’s bassist Marco, singing either the chorus or parts of the song or like in one song, the whole damn song by himself. The song where he sang on his own, “The Islander” contrast quite alot with the deep growling voice Nightwish listeners would have heard on “I Wish I Had An Angle” and this too was a good song.

Overall the album was quite pleasing, somewhere around 4 stars with highlights being, “The Poet and The Pendulum”, “Bye Bye Beautiful”. “Amaranth”, “The Islander”, and “Last of The Wilds”.

“Bye Bye Beautiful” btw is a song that helped me get some anger issues out of my chest, I recommend it for any guy betrayed by a woman, which is why I’m putting up a promo version of the song here (: (promo meaning there are voice overs)

Herman Li: Ibanez Guitar Clinic

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Last weekend on the 15th I went for this guitar clinic held by Bentley Music. I seriously had no idea who the hell was playing, but it was a gig so I was like heh sure. I was originally supposed to go with Jingle and Jian, but suddenly it turns out my dad, my bro and his gf were going to lol.
On the way to the clinic I managed to listen to a few songs performed by the man who was performing at the clinic later.

His name is Herman Li and he’s from popular power metal band Dragonforce. It sounded at first like some Blind Guardian material from their first few albums but it had a hell of alot faster beat and guitar rhythms as I soon found out.

It was fun a fun gig, there was a q&a session and Herman would teach us some neat tricks and tell us funny stories in between some performances.

The final performances was however absolutely awesome.
Local band Deja Voodoo Spells came on stage and performed one of their songs with Herman and then played a Hendrix cover, awesomenesss+10

As always videos after the splitter

Cosmic Funk Express

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Last saturday I went to one of the most awe inspiring gigs I’ve been too (I need to go for more gigs). It was a reunion gig by Cosmic Funk Express held at Groove Junction, Hartamas. I’ve never heard of this band before, so thanks Jingle for inviting me to tag along :D

The band is a 3 piece band, 1 drum, 1 bass, 1 guy playing 2 guitars at the same time. The music they play ranges from Jazz, Classical, Funk, and other stuff not sure how to describe lol.
It was fun watching Zack Kim (the guitarist) play like a wacko. The band looked like they had a lot of fun entertaining us too and were funny as hell throughout the night. I wish I had a video camera but I only had a digi cam and could only record 20+ minutes of video, so I didnt get to record much, especially the bands trademark Super Mario theme performance and the in-band “battle”.

Anyway this performance is proof that our local scene is in need of serious attention, alot of people dont know about local bands, and those that are promoted while good are basicly the same thing again and again… and now i’m not sure what to talk about lol
Hope you enjoyed this lame post, oh and click the splitter at the bottom for some youtube videos courtesy of mua
